The Indian Cowgirl Association:
Building on the principles of many Native American tribes, the
Indian Cowgirl Association* Program offered to young women between
the ages of 12-17 combines the essence of the “Old West” and
Native American traditions to give young women the skills needed
to make healthy lifestyle choices in the areas of nutrition, exercise,
and goal setting. This 6-week program will enable participants
to better understand themselves, the impact of decisions, and the
value of setting goals, and limits.
In addition, young women build confidence through interaction
with horses. Through their work with horses, these young participants
see the application of such life skills as teamwork, diligence,
humility, and patience. Participants gain an understanding of long-held,
timeless Native American values such as honesty, self-respect,
and service to others. As a result, these young women are better
prepared to handle the daily pressures they face.
